What were the chances that this stranger from Cyrene would play a crucial part in the plan of God?
Simon, a man from Cyrene, was in the city of Jerusalem, most likely for the Passover festival. We have no indication as to whether his being there had to do with his having a true heart for God, or simply pursuing a religious ritual. As to why he was at the parade-route for Jesus from Pilate to cross, we’ll never know: was it happenstance, or was he there to gawk, or perhaps to worship?
But in any event, opportunity was thrust upon him, literally. The Roman soldiers accompanying Jesus had the authority to command citizens to do just about anything. And so they compelled Simon to carry Jesus’ cross, as Jesus was physically failing. Simon ended up assisting Jesus to do the work for which He came, to die on a cross for Simon and for all, for you and me as well. Was Simon aware of what he was doing? Was the cross his burden, or his privilege?
This very day, someone, or something, may be thrust upon you. You might be compelled to carry a burden, either physical, emotional, or spiritual. And, in that, you might not only be taking on a load, but also shouldering a privilege to walk with Jesus, and to experience yet again His mighty work to save you and all of us.
May we always say “yes” to God when, even in strange circumstances, He calls us to carry Jesus’ cross.
