Have you ever noticed that those who are the brightest ask the best questions? Though we tend to be dazzled by those who are talkers, its the inquirers who possess the keenest minds. Such was the case when the teachers of the law met the boy Jesus in the temple: it was noted by Luke that He was asking them questions and that all who heard Him were amazed at His understanding and His answers (Luke 2:46-47). And so, very often, Jesus is asking people questions. In today’s story, those who attempted to trap Him with a question, get a question in return, one which unveils the negative attitude of their hearts: I will also ask you a question, and you tell me (Luke 20:3). In another case, it unveils the faith which would facilitate healing: what do you want me to do for you? (Matthew 20:32).
And so, it’s no surprise that these questions continue. As you pray, I encourage you not only to ask your questions of God — what should I do, what’s going on, what do you want me to do? — but also to allow time for God to ask His questions of you. As you pause in silence, you may hear Him whisper questions like: how are you feeling? what do you want Me to do for you? Who do you say that I AM? How can I help you? Your answers to God’s keen questions may well determine how He will answer all of your questions, for good.
